A school newspaper name has to look good above serious reporting, sports scores, opinion columns, and one extremely important lunch-menu investigation. These ideas cover elementary, middle school, high school, college, digital, and literary publications.
My favorite school newspaper names
I would begin with these fifteen because they are flexible, easy to design around, and unlikely to feel embarrassing when the staff looks back after graduation.
- The Campus Current: my favorite all-purpose school newspaper name.
- The Student Voice: clear, credible, and centered on students.
- The Hallway Herald: charming for elementary or middle school.
- The Daily Bell: memorable even when publication is not actually daily.
- The School Record: timeless and easy to keep.
- The Commons: modern, broad, and excellent for a digital publication.
- The Open Notebook: warm and journalism-focused.
- The Student Press: direct enough for any age group.
- The Morning Edition: polished for a weekly or monthly paper.
- The Mascot Monitor: easy to personalize without using a specific mascot here.
- The Hall Pass: playful and perfect for student life coverage.
- Between Classes: relaxed, flexible, and especially good online.
- The Academic Observer: serious enough for high school or college.
- The Schoolhouse Scoop: cheerful for younger reporters.
- The Next Edition: optimistic, modern, and ready for a clean masthead.

Classic school newspaper names
Classic names use words readers already associate with journalism: record, report, chronicle, gazette, herald, times, post, journal, and press. They age well and make the publication’s purpose immediately clear.
I would pair one of these with the school, town, mascot, street, landmark, or founding year. That small local detail turns a generic title into something the community can own.

Creative and modern newspaper names
Modern names can be shorter and less literal, especially for a digital publication. The title still needs enough context that a new student can tell it is news rather than a club, podcast, or mysterious administrative portal.

Funny school newspaper names
A funny title can work beautifully for a feature section, satire issue, or informal publication. For the main paper, I would choose a joke that still allows serious reporting to sit beneath the masthead without tonal whiplash.
Avoid jokes targeting students, teachers, grades, protected traits, or real controversies. The newspaper should cover the school’s people, not make its name at their expense.

High school and college newspaper names

The project names and creative group names can help if the publication is part magazine, yearbook, podcast, or multimedia newsroom.
Digital school newspaper names
A digital publication needs a title that works as a site header, social handle, newsletter sender, and spoken recommendation. Short names help, but clarity matters more than grabbing a clever web-sounding word.

Names for sections and special editions
Sometimes the publication already has a name and the staff needs titles for sections, newsletters, podcasts, or special issues. These can be more playful because the main masthead provides context.

How to choose a newspaper name
Start with the publication’s scope, tone, and lifespan. A one-semester class paper can enjoy a very specific joke, while an official school newspaper needs a title future staffs can inherit.
Search the school, district, local community, and web for existing publications with the same name. A familiar word is fine; an identical title nearby creates confusion.
Test the finalists as a masthead, web address, social handle, email sender, and spoken phrase. “I read it in ___” is a wonderfully unforgiving sentence.
Ask the staff to rank three choices, then include the adviser or school administrator in the final check if approval is required. It is much easier to resolve naming concerns before designing the logo.
For more school-minded inspiration, browse class group names, creative classroom names, and presentation group names.
The final headline test
Place an ordinary headline beneath each finalist. A good newspaper name can introduce a championship, policy change, art show, student profile, and weather closure without feeling out of place.
My final rule is to choose the title future students can make their own. The staff changes; the strongest masthead gives every new newsroom room to write the next edition.
Before the final vote, print the top three names in the same plain typeface and place them above several very different sample headlines. Removing logo treatments prevents a beautiful design from carrying a weaker title through the decision.
Ask a few students outside the staff what they think each publication covers. If they mistake the newspaper for a literary magazine, tutoring club, or administrative newsletter, the title may need one clarifying word.
Check pronunciation too, especially with geographic, historic, or Latin-inspired names. Reporters should be able to introduce the publication confidently during interviews, announcements, and community events without holding another truly lengthy staff meeting about unexpectedly difficult syllables and pronunciations aloud.
